Tom Hanks played the role of an ordained minister recently, and it wasn't just an act.
The 59-year-old actor officiated Girls star Allison Williams' wedding to her longtime boyfriend, CollegeHumor co-founder Ricky Van Veen, on a Wyoming ranch earlier this month.
"I studied the divinity. I studied as a minister for nearly $35," Hanks told E! Online Sunday while promoting the upcoming Steven Spielberg-directed drama Bridge of Spies. "Out of that I have a certificate that makes me available for weddings."
The star-studded guest list included music superstars Katy Perry, John Mayer and Bruce Springsteen and actresses Lena Dunham and Mindy Kaling. Williams' dad, newsman Brian Williams, walked her down the aisle.
Bridge of Spies stars Hanks as a New York City lawyer recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. It opens nationwide October 16.
Girls returns for its fifth season in 2016 on HBO.

Kate Winslet doesn't want much for her 40th birthday.
"I'd quite like a pressure cooker," the Oscar-winning actress, who turns 40 on October 5, told E! Newswhile promoting her new movie, Steve Jobs. "I want to start making bone broths."
When her co-star Michael Fassbender asked, "What does that entail," Winslet happily explained.
"Taking a whole bunch of bones and putting them in a pressure cooker with lots of chopped-up leeks and onions and celery and all that stuff, and you make this amazing restorative bone broth," she said. "You boil it up for like 12 hours and it cures you of all ailments."
Fassbender loved the idea.
"I will get you the pressure cooker if you will cook me one of those bones broths," he told her.
Winslet is the latest celebrity to jump on the bone broth bandwagon.
Her Divergent co-star Shailene Woodley raved about its healing qualities to David Letterman earlier this year.
Gwyneth Paltrow put it on Goop's winter detox menu and Salma Hayek calls it her secret to looking young.
"It's full of gelatin and fat and has bone marrow and I think it is very good to keep yourself young," Hayek, who drinks a cup a day, told People recently. "If you do the right fat, I think that is the key."

Porsche has responded to the lawsuit filed by the teenage daughter of Paul Walker earlier this week.
Walker was riding in a Porsche Carrera GT driven by his friend Roger Rodas in November 2013 when Rodas lost control of the car, which struck trees and burst into flames.
The lawsuit from 16-year-old Meadow Walker claims the vehicle had design defects, and that it was traveling 63 to 71 miles per hour when it spun out of control.
In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, a representative for Porsche says, “As we have said before, we are very sad whenever anyone is hurt in a Porsche vehicle, but we believe the authorities’ reports in this case clearly establish that this tragic crash resulted from reckless driving and excessive speed.”
An investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol had concluded that unsafe speed caused the crash.
"The bottom line is that the Porsche Carrera GT is a dangerous car. It doesn't belong on the street. And we shouldn't be without Paul Walker or his friend, Roger Rodas," Meadow Walker's lawyer, Jeff Milam, told ABC News regarding the suit filed Monday in California Superior Court. The lawsuit does not state the monetary amount in damages being sought by the plaintiff.

In a heartbreaking post on Instagram, Johnson informed his fans that he had to put his French bulldog puppy Brutus down on Monday night, after the puppy ingested poisonous mushrooms.
"Another reminder we have to live and love as greatly as we can today, because tomorrow is never guaranteed," wrote Johnson.
"At approximately 11:15 p.m. last night myself and @laurenhashianofficial had to make the painful decision to end Brutus' suffering by taking him off of life support and sending his soul to pup heaven. I held his lil' paw as he was finally at peace," Johnson wrote.
The news comes just weeks after Johnson saved Brutus from drowning in his family pool.
Johnson explains that Brutus ate a mushroom while playing outside with the wrestler's other puppy, Hobbs, but unfortunately, "this mushroom happened to have a lethal toxicity and within hours it was rapidly destroying his liver and immune system to the point of no return."
Johnson thanked the "incredibly caring" nurses and staff at The Animal Medical Center at Cooper City for doing everything they could to try to save Brutus, and he warned dog owners to be mindful of mushrooms in "yards, parks or anywhere outside your dogs play."
"We'll always love you Brutus," wrote Johnson, "And you'll always be my lil' main man and rough housing Brute."
